In Weimar on April 17 the German cabinet decided to refer the peace treaty to a referendum of the German people if it deviates from the fourteen principles laid down by President Wilson.
Paris April 17 The American delegation says President Wilson has not surrendered any of his fourteen peace principles and has harmonized views with Britain and France.
Five people died during a Socialist demonstration in Rome, according to dispatches. The report says the deaths occurred amid protests and unrest as authorities faced mounting public tension.
Greensburg reports Elimer Robbins, a Big Four railroad detective, died after attempting to arrest two Black booze runners on a freight train. The incident occurred April 17 as authorities pursued alleged lawbreakers aboard the train.
Indianapolis April 17 M J Abbott of Bedford has been named Lawrence County Chairman of the War Savings Drive.
Intelligent tests conducted in Bedford schools have attracted broad interest from school officials and other workers in education. Superintendent E W Montgomery has been invited to speak at Bloomington’s Educational Measurement conference, while the University of Illinois seeks a detailed written report. Our High School has already passed the tests set to be required for all state high schools by the Department of Education.
Street Commissioner Jack Leahy reports the first class concrete bridge on South M Street near the Monon railway is complete. It costs more than a wooden bridge but stands as a model of beauty and permanence. The new method long used will form the basis for future projects and school leaders are adopting it after university preparation. A bound report of proceedings and Montgomery's task will be printed and appear in leading educational magazines.
Thursday afternoon the grand jury returned thirty additional indictments, totaling eighty three for the term. It urged improvements at the country farm including sanitation fixes and a rebuilt cess pool, noted unsanitary toilets, and recommended competent supervision. The jail report praised the superintendent but called for new cots, repaired doors, and improved walkways and retaining wall.

A Whippet tank will be exhibited in Bedford on Monday April 21 from 3 to 10:30 p.m. The 6 ton two man vehicle will be shown as part of a government tour to demonstrate wartime preparedness and promote Victory Notes of the Fifth loan. The train carrying the tank arrives at 3 p.m. and the tank will perform stunts on the streets.
The Bedford Loans organization mobilizes both women and men to solicit Victory subscriptions by selling in territories or banks or at headquarters on the east side square this Saturday April 19. The campaign emphasizes patriotic duty and victory as gratitude for the war’s end.
Leonard A. Evans by attorney WE Clark sues Walker Tr. Hines for 15000 damages in Lawrence circuit court. He alleges on May 20 1918 while boarding Chicago Indianapolis and Louisville No 4 at 2:30 am he tripped on a rotten platform with protruding nails and loose coal, was drawn under the train and injured his head back left knee and left hand amputated above the wrist.
Curtis Bex, once listed as missing in December, is now recorded among casualty lists as killed in action. He was a Huron Indiana boy. Also reported are declines in typhoid cases with Miss Helen Saladee improving, and James Robert Leland Saladee recovering along with Rosanna Pace who remains ill at the Saladee home. Mrs Chas Crawford on F street remains seriously ill with typhoid, and the Giles baby on 6th street is ill.

A cheerful indoor picnic occurred Wednesday afternoon in the annex of First Church, drawing families and neighbors for shared snacks, games, and light entertainment. Organizers report a warm turnout and community spirit.
The Annex of the First Methodist church hosted about sixty five Primary department members for their annual Easter picnic indoors due to rain. Mrs. C. H. Allen led with Mrs. J. W. Beard assisting as nuts and fancy cakes were served. Austin Trinkle, overseas, arrived at Camp Jackson.
Lieut. Jack Blackburn, recently discharged, had been home a few days and left for Indianapolis Thursday to locate baggage that failed to arrive, which he suspects is lost or misplaced. He will return to here after arranging his baggage.
The Mack Stock Company presents a week long engagement at Avenue Hotel Lot on J Street Bedford starting April 28. A ten piece band seven piece orchestra twelve actors perform new vaudeville acts in a large tent seating 1700. Opening bill is The Bishop's Carriage.
Funeral services for Mrs Walter Gillette were held in Louisville on Sunday with many attendees from Bedford and surrounding areas. Local reports note a large turnout and final prayers led by the minister.
Funeral services for Mrs. Walter Gillette formerly of this city were held at her Louisville home after dying from a heart trouble last week. Attendees included Mrs George Dodd and several local residents. The remains were transported to Indianapolis for interment.

Dr. Nicholson, famed Bedford dentist, plans to return to Orange County with wife Lucy Trinkle. he will open an office in Orleans. Friends regret his departure as J W Beard family rents Cumberland Flats and prepares to move from West Fourteenth Street after selling to Dr. John R. Andrews.
Marion County World War veterans urge a statewide convention in Indianapolis on April 24 at the State House. The all day session will elect officers for a new Indiana state veterans organization and set a path toward national affiliation.
Arthur Lewis of Indian Springs faced a runaway Wednesday at Gale Station while hauling pottery. The wagon struck the end of a freight car on a switch, tearing the wagon and breaking a hole in the car, scattering pottery. Lewis escaped injury and the horses bolted with minor damage.
