Bedford school news notes the Golden Rule Series is being considered for reading texts for fourth through sixth graders. The books, patterned after McGuffy, claim a modern up to date touch with vital moral values guiding children to discuss and embody ideals for everyday problems.
The Bedford High class of 1955 recorded 49 orders totaling 855.83 dollars for graduation pictures. Nine seniors had orders under ten dollars. Photos were taken September 26 by Cochran Studio, Des Moines, with glossy prints to be reproduced in the 1956 Torch yearbook.
Local F A chapter sponsors an essay contest for B E L S and vocational agriculture students. Topic is Care of a Son and Litter. Due December 10. Two top essays win gifts and sign a contract to return a portion of the litter. Judges Eugene Burgmaier Marion Livingston Jim Lucas.
Don Vawter leads a cast in the B H S junior class play Captain Apple Jack to be staged next Wednesday evening December 14 with a matinee Monday afternoon December 12. Cast includes Gary Clark Jon Clark Carolyn Cummings Don Dougherty Dorothy Dukes Jim Lucas Roger Mick Marilyn Mumm Cheryl O Dell Barbara Snyder and Mike Travis directed by Mr King Wisdom. The motto The best preparation for the future is the present well seen to is by George MacDonald.
School meals listed for December 8 to 15 show daily options including chili with crackers, peanut butter sandwiches, vegetables, fruit and milk. Meals feature beef hash, green beans, mashed potatoes with gravy, ham salad sandwiches, roast beef, jelly sandwiches and assorted salads with desserts like pudding and fruit cake.
Gerhard Seger journalist and lecturer will present his latest news and views on America and Germany at Bedford School assembly Friday December 9 at 12 45 p m Seger an authority on Germany and Central Europe recently returned from a study tour of Europe and is on his twenty first U S lecture tour
Principal J S Taylor says 92 of 206 Bedford High School students had perfect attendance for the first 12 weeks ending November 23, with 60 school days in that term. Seventysix students achieved perfect attendance in the last six weeks.
Grav ity High star Dean Thompson was declared ineligible by the THSAA after spending 21 days in Bedford schools. The 21 days count toward a full semester, giving him nine total and barring winter sports. No action announced on games he already played.
Lenox-Bedford swept the junior high contests as Bedford Bullpups defeated Lenox 74-33 and the Bullpup B team edged Lenox 29-23. Butch Lucas led Lenox with 14 points in the B game while Shepherd scored 23 to pace the visitors in the finale as Bedford built a big halftime lead and never looked back.
Miss Alice Ann Beemer and Lyle Miller were married December 4 at 2 30 pm in the Conway Methodist church with Rev. Howard De Vore officiating. The couple will live on a farm east of Grant City after a wedding trip. Numerous Grant City and Clearfield guests attended the ceremony and reception.
Mrs. Wm Boyd reported a DEC 2 gathering hosted by Mrs George Mutti of Chapter K E CO. Illness prevented her mother from entertaining as planned. The program featured The A B C Countries of South America presented by Mrs William Rybolt with Co W F Meeta. The C W F of the Christian church met in the social rooms.
The church calendar lists a December 7 worship service directed by Mrs Welton Wallace with theme Sender of a Prophet and program Still Greater Service directed by Mrs A V Hart. other notes cover a W M A Day of Prayer December 2, an Art Club event December 8, and a W S C S bazaar and dinner December 3.
A large crowd attended the junior class play at Braddyville community hall. Church groups set committees for the Union Christmas program to be held at the Methodist church. Various local families visited, hosted or attended events including a S C S banquet in Bedford and Thanksgiving gatherings across Braddyville, Clarinda, Maryville, Shenandoah, and Bedford with numerous family and neighbor visits.
