Baytown welcomes Academy Sports Outdoors with a 6 p.m. Thursday ribbon cutting at 6425 Garth Road attended by Store Director Natalie Colquitt and about 125 staff. The first 50 invited shoppers include 25 children from the Baytown Family YMCA and 25 from a Houston Texans YMCA program, with shopping sessions starting at 8 a.m. Friday.
Baytown police officers visit Stephen F. Austin Elementary for the Pennies for Justice program raising coins for the Helping a Hero Fund and the Marcus Lee Zaruba Criminal Justice Foundation. The fund supports officers facing illness or injury, honoring Baytown native Zaruba who died at 29. SWAT gear display concludes the piece.
HEB plans a Joe V's Smart Shop on Garth Road at Rollingbrook in the former Kmart site. Spokeswoman Cyndy Garza says the store is in final planning stages with a projected early 2012 opening, though no exact date is set. Garza noted Joe V's offers very low prices with a smaller selection than typical HEB stores.
Harris County grand jury declined to indict Kimberly Sheppard and Michael Haynes after their two female pit bull mixes escaped in July and attacked a 10 year old boy on a bicycle. Defense attorney Turner says jurors weighed negligence and securing the dogs, and felt the case was tragic. The couple had been the subject of widespread local coverage since the attack.
Members of The Baytown Five will get their day in court but the date has been moved to March. The trials and court appearances of Joshua Ashford and the four other men accused in the 2009 beating death of Baytown resident Kevin Jerome Powell were all postponed Monday until March, authorities said. Ashford's attorney is Murray Newman.
State and federal agencies begin work on Cedar Bayou Watershed Protection Plan after a public meeting at Baytown Wetlands Center. About 32 attendees including private citizens and Friends of Cedar Bayou United discussed water quality issues from livestock runoff to aging septic systems and dredging impacts.
