Report on Estes probe and other Senate actions
A Senate investigative committee is expected to be highly critical in a forthcoming report on Billie Sol Estes and related affairs involving Mundt. Estes, once claiming $50 million, is appealing fraud convictions amid investigations into cotton allocation manipulation and nonexistent fertilizer tanks. Separately, the 5th Circuit in New Orleans posted a 35 percent rise in appeals to 1,033, while total appeals across circuits rose 11 percent to 6,023. The Senate voted 60 to 1 to condemn Soviet oppression of Jews, with Fulbright the lone dissent. Also noted is a 1927 Dempsey-Tunney heavyweight bout in Chicago with a gate of $2,660.
