Families shelter in campers after Ike devastation
Dana Baldwin and family live in a dark damp house unable to open windows with no power. They rely on a generator burning 12 gallons daily, arguing FEMA will not cover gas while hotel stays cost up to 100 a day. FEMA meals and city aid help, but stress and expenses mount as pets suffer and looters threaten. Nearby Collins family also camps in a borrowed camper after returning from Waxahachie. They clear debris by day, retreat to darkness by night, awaiting recovery and a return to normal housing.

Animals fed after salty surge strain on supplies
Ed Schnieder, site manager of the Animal Recovery and Feeding Program, says numbers of surviving livestock are dropping as volunteers and organizations aid the effort. Cattle and horses remain, with water and feed shortages easing thanks to donations from the Thoroughbred Association, ADM, Texas Department of Agriculture, and Texas Cooperative Extension. Local animal control, the Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, and volunteer fire departments from Anahuac assist with branding and water troughs. Donations of feed or hay are welcome at the park between 7 am and 8 pm.
