After Hurricane Ike, Baytown residents in Whispering Pines live in boards and darkness while adopting a camping lifestyle. Dani and Dana Baldwin evacuated with their 27 foot camper and endured two weeks with two birds and three dogs in cramped quarters.
In Anahuac and across Chambers County, Curly the horse survived the Ike surge while other animals perished. Owner Tyler Fitzgerald, a Texas AgriLife agent, recalls taking three of six horses as floodwaters rose seven and a half feet. Surviving horses are spread, fences broken, and unclaimed animals await retrieval or aid at White's Park in Hankamer with a livestock staging point for feed and hay.
FEMA teams arrive in Baytown to install Operation Blue Roof tarps on damaged homes. Contractors from RLH Construction, hired via Crown Roofing, begin tarping as crews assess wind and storm damage from Hurricane Ike. Local residents hope for quick protection and repair.
Baytown City Council approved measures to attract police recruits including a sign-on incentive, academy reimbursement, relocation reimbursement, and a service credit program. The department has 12 openings and programs extend to officers hired in the last year and those living outside city limits.
