GOP speakers Jim Mayor Harris County Republican Chairman and Marjorie Arsht vice chairman will address a 7 30 p m Thursday gathering of East Harris County Republicans at the Chamber of Commerce building. A fire briefly affected the Baytown Refinery Chemical Plant paraxylene unit at 7 50 a m Thursday with no injuries and slight damage. Citizens and a large State Water Pollution Board crew clashed at a Wooster gathering on pollution in the Houston Ship Channel and nearby waterways. Chamber of Commerce chair Gene Muller led remarks noting worsening conditions and fish kills as the two hour session debated public affairs and proposed bill changes.
Harris County officials tested plant discharges along the Houston Ship Channel and enforced anti-pollution laws before 1961, quando the State Water Pollution Board was formed. State Rep. Bob Eckhardt said he opposed the bill giving the board pollution authority, urging preservation of bays for recreation and industry while criticizing wasteful channel use by some firms.

Democratic leaders drop minimum wage, congressional redistricting and unemployment compensation from priority action as Senate committee backs a late September adjournment. The plan keeps these measures for 1966, with emphasis on education funding, farm subsidies, immigration reform, union shop repeal, and foreign aid, while federal pay raises are left off the list. President Johnson appears to tacitly approve the move.
About 160 National Guardsmen were sent to Natchez Mississippi as tension rose after an attempted car bombing aimed at NAACP leader George Metcalfe. Metcalfe remained in fair condition in hospital. President Johnson met for 45 minutes with steel negotiators and said progress was being made to bar gains.

John G. Traxler known as Jack, 48, Humble Oil official and civic leader, died Thursday in Houston near St. Joseph's Hospital after chest pains. He had worked at Humble’s Baytown Refinery since 1939, was a purchasing coordinator in Houston headquarters, and previously served as Baytown refinery supervisor. Survived by wife Mary Lou, three daughters Christine Marie 15, Mary Margaret 13, Lisa 7, and mother Mrs. W. F. Traxler of San Antonio. Active at St. Mark's Church, he chaired the church finance and served on Humble Employer Credit Union board. led United Fund drive at Baytown Refinery in 1963. Born January 3, 1917, in Enmedorf, Texas. educated in Hot Wells, Breckenridge High School San Antonio. attended Westmoreland College two years. earned bachelor’s and master’s in electrical engineering.
Hurricane Betsy built to a dangerous 15 mile an hour turn but a northward swing reduced the threat to south Florida. Officials cautioned residents to stay alert for 24 hours as Betsy grows stronger offshore. Chief forecaster Gordon Dunn noted the danger remains remote but not zero.
Dalice fire representatives urged a $50 pay increase but the council, facing a 3s¢5-56 budget, rejected the request for now. Thursday evening sessions discussed budget constraints and possible cuts, including eliminating six new police positions proposed by Lanham. Mrs. Vicky Going, 28, of 1309 Bob Smith Road Baytown, died at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at Methodist Hospital in Houston from injuries suffered in a car wreck Saturday near Schilenbirg. Funeral services are set for 4 p.m. Friday at Earthman Chapel and 4:30 p.m. Friday at St Joseph’s Catholic Church. Survived by husband Eddie Going, a son Eddie Going Jr., a daughter Teina Going, mother Mrs. Leola Isaack, brother Jimmy Ray Isaack, and nephew Jamie Isaack, all of Baytown.

John Chancellor named new director of Voice of America pledges to inject vitality into the program. Dr Albert Schweitzer, 90, gravely ill at his Jungle hospital in Libreville Gabon Africa.
Board President Sam Bramlett names Bill Strickter and John Sylvester to study completing the separation of Lee College and the local school districts. They join College President George H. Gentry and Dean Walter Rundell, with school district trustees, to implement the referendum split. Also named are Jim Black, G. A. Boatright to salary committee, Royal D. Burnside and L. L. Bud Marsh to liaison with the city council on district issues. A pledged contract with the district’s new funds depository, First National Bank, was approved.
