Martin Hanson, a noted Wisconsin conservationist who helped preserve the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior, died at 81. Found outside his Mellen log cabin, he had been in poor health and apparently fell, breaking his hip. Hanson and his brother Louis were prominent Democrats known for entertaining politicians with outdoors life. He guided President Kennedy during a 1963 visit as the islands were pushed for national park status, leading to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in 1970.
