United States May Transfer Troops To Italy
United Press Foreign Analyst Charles M. McCann reports Italy faces a critical choice between continuing Western alliance cooperation or leaning toward Communists. U.S. troops in Austria, about 410,000, could be shifted to northern Italy amid Italian political tensions. Premier Scelba fights internal threats as Gronchi’s presidency favors a left-socialist coalition, while U.S. aid shifts with a $50 million long term loan for southern Italy. Pravda condemns the trend, and Ambassador Luce departs for Washington to brief on a brewing Italian crisis.

Union Secretary Linked to Red Activities in U S
Washington UPI Julius Emspak, recently freed by the Supreme Court, has a lengthy record of Communist front activity. Emspak, general secretary of the United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers of America, led a rival union opposing CIO anti Communist efforts. The House Un American Activities Committee had long fingered Communist influence in several CIO unions, including ones led by Emspak. The Supreme Court, in a Fifth Amendment ruling, absolved Emspak of contempt for refusing to answer a congressional question about party membership.
