James H. McCartney an award winning Washington correspondent and columnist who specialized in foreign affairs and defense policy for Knight Ridder died May 6 2011 at his Holmes Beach Florida home at age 85. He covered nuclear weapons policy the Israeli Arab conflict and the Vietnam War and wrote for 31 papers including the Philadelphia Inquirer Miami Herald and Detroit Free Press. He traveled to Paris for peace talks and witnessed Sadat 1977 speech and the 1986 Reykjavik summit. He received the Edward Weintal Award in 1989 and led the Gridiron Club as president.

Fifteen members of the Class of 2011 honored the teachers they say inspired them at the May 5 Students' Choice Awards Banquet sponsored by the Goose Creek CISD Education Foundation. Held at the Tower Club at Royal Purple Raceway Park, foundation members and district officials joined Baytown dignitaries from City, Lee College, and local business leaders. Banquet emcee Gilbert Santana praised the district and its teachers as phenomenal.
