Sundown Island pelican hatchings delight photographers
On Sundown Island Baytown warden Chester Smith preserves a sanctuary where Mexican Brown Pelicans recover from DDT. A small group, including photographer Linda DuBose and Tim, son-in-law to Chester, visited by boat from Port O’Conner. They observed nests, hatchings, and the dramatic first views of newborn pelicans, while hoping to capture roseate spoonbills next trip.

Goose Creek CISD will hold its annual kindergarten registration roundup Friday May 6 from 8 30 to 10 30 a m at all district elementary schools for children enrolling in GCCISD for the first time. To qualify for the 2011 12 year children must be age five by Sept 1 2011. Parents must bring Social Security card birth certificate immunization records and proof of residence. The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Baytown will host a 7 p.m. debate in the Baytown City Hall Council Chamber at 2401 Market Street. Districts 4, 5 and 6 have incumbents seeking one more three year term against a single challenger. Mercedes Renteria, president of HCCGB and Baytown council member, said invites went to all candidates though not all confirmed. The event aims to let voters hear candidates on taxes, roads, drainage and other city issues.
