Congress investigates the CIA partial recovery of a Soviet G class submarine. Anahuac Names Gene Best New School Superintendent

Gene Best, long time Anahuac High School principal, is named superintendent of the Anahuac School District effective July 1, succeeding Henry Wheeler who left to lead in Longview. Board president Etton Kirkham announced the move after a special session. Best, a Port Arthur native, holds a BS in physical education and an MEd in educational administration, with prior roles as coach, counselor, and principal at multiple Texas schools. He and his wife Linda have three children Gena John and Jennifer.

Baytown High Schools Select Relay Queen Contest Delegates

Baytown’s Lee and Sterling high schools name senior contestants for the 1975 Baytown Relay Queen contest to be held during the Baytown Relays. Ken Burrough and Guy Robjeris of the Houston Oilers will judge the 51 contestants from color photos. Ten finalists, five from each school, will be announced at the relay finals on April 5. The girls will be presented in school assemblies April 4.

Optimists Oyster Fry Planned by Baytown Club

The Baytown Evening Optimist Club will host an oyster fry Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Bayshore Rod Reel and Gun Club building at 3223 Minnesota. Tickets are $3 from members and include oysters french fries and trimmings with serving continuing until 7 p.m. or until guests are served. Proceeds go to youth and community service projects. The Texas House tentatively approves a measure to require state land oil and gas leases to prohibit gas sales outside Texas without Railroad Commission approval. Senate 30 to 0 votes push the bill toward the governor with a final vote expected next week. The bill aims to secure Texas gas for Texas needs across 23 million state acres.

Harris County Approves 16500 for Library Bookmobile

Harris County Commissioners Court unanimously approves 16500 funding for the Sterling Municipal Library bookmobile. Commissioner Jim Fonteno initiated the motion, seconded by Commissioner Bob Eckels. Fonteno says the bookmobile serves outlying Baytown communities and senior citizens, and he opposed closing the Wooster library branch if the county would fund the bookmobile.

Ballet Troupe To Perform Here Friday

Several hundred Baytonians prepare for a Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre performance at 8 p.m. Friday in Robert E. Lee Auditorium. Brought by US Steel, the 45 member troupe will present excerpts from Swan Lake Romeo and Juliet and Soiree Musicale. Carl Forkum welcomes spectators and the troupe will base at the Ramada Inn for five days. A Baytown Community Chorus reception and breakfast follow at Charlie Brown's on Decker Drive. Ticket demand exceeded supply.
