Freed hostages as Japanese extremists seize Keidanren HQ

Tokyo officials say four Japanese far right extremists with a samurai sword rifle and pistol seized the Tokyo headquarters of Keidanren and held hostages including a managing director before releasing all but two. Police surrounded the building and negotiated while the group decried the postwar Yalta Potsdam order and claimed ties to the Y and P System and the Shield Society.

Humphrey Air Port Owner Sees Sale to County Possible

Col Howard Humphrey said he would be absolutely delighted to sell his Humphrey Airport near Baytown to Harris County if an airport master plan study leads to a sale. The county considers a $190,000 FAA funded feasibility study including Humphrey, Hooks Memorial, and Lakeview airports. Humphrey has not been contacted by the city about selling, but said he would cooperate in the study and would consider selling if taxes and expansion incentives align.

Subsidence rate slows in Baytown new data show declines

National Geodetic Survey readings on Crow Road and Bayway Drive indicate the bench mark sank 24 inches in about 2.7 years, a 2.77 inch per year rate, with earlier surveys showing higher subsidence. Baytown official Fletcher Hickerson notes tide levels and road elevation changes, while areas near the Baytown La Porte Tunnel show 2 inch per year subsidence since 1973. The survey team plans road resurveying and warns of rising water near the Brownwood perimeter road as tides and land elevation shift.

Mine disaster prompts tunnel rescue in Tower City

In Tower City Pennsylvania a coal mine collapsed on Tuesday trapping a miner. A six-inch tunnel was pushed through to reach him as rescue workers labored underground. Meanwhile in Austin the House tentatively approved a May 4 bill granting counties power to regulate massage parlors outside city limits.

Wednesday marked the filing deadline for Baytown city council races as seven candidates entered three district contests and one mayoral race. Expansion Of Library To Be A DC Topic

Sterling Municipal Library expansion will be described by Librarian Flora Wilhite at the Baytown Chamber of Commerce luncheon meeting at noon Friday at Holiday Inn. The library is being expanded with 1,095,000 in bond funds approved in the 1975 city bond issue. The size is being more than doubled.
