Texas Budget Board Approves Bond Sale for Ship Repairs
The Texas Budget Board allowed a $1 million bond sale contingent on the ship remaining dry berthed in its current spot. Public safety prompted the closure as the vessel listed more with rising water in its aging hull. Ship manager Andy Smith, after three weeks fighting leaks, lamented ongoing water intrusion while divers applied a temporary hull seal to stop a long standing leak involving residual wartime oil. Repairs require skimming contaminated water before work can proceed, as shifting of the ship in the channel may have freed aging rivets and caused leaks. Reopening is hoped within a week to catch the summer tourist season and fund full repairs.
