Smith vetoes one-year state budget in Texas
Gov. Preston Smith vetoed the $2.8 billion one-year appropriations bill and two related revenue bills passed by the 61st Legislature. He warned the budget costs Texans more tax money and may be unconstitutional. He praised a teachers pay raise bill and signaled a return to a two-year budget with possible special sessions. The constitution requires biennial meetings, and voters choose Aug. 5.

Way Clear For Flood Control Bond Voting
Harris County attorney Joe Resweber told Commissioners Court to call a 21.5 million flood control district bond election likely on July 15. Two Die In Beaumont Refinery Blast
An explosion and fire at a Mobil refinery in Beaumont Texas killed two workers and critically burned a third. Walton J. Goodwin Sr aged about 45 of Beaumont was found by company firefighters among the flames, and Gilbert Woolard 44 also of Beaumont died about four hours later.

Drowning Victim Carl Fitzgerald Rites Set
Funeral services for Carl Randy Fitzgerald a 19 year old from Lynchburg will be held at 2 p m Sunday in Paul A Lee Chapel. He drowned Friday while swimming at Little Sandy Lake off Interstate 10 in Channelview. Body recovered by Harris County Sheriff Marine Division about 70 feet from shore in 15 to 18 feet of water. Witnesses Dan Trent and Tommy W Ball said Fitzgerald fell behind as they swam from north to south bank. He is survived by parents and siblings and was a 1968 Deer Park High School graduate employed in Baytown. Burial at White Cemetery near Highlands with pallbearers listed.
