The Texas Air Control Board moved to file suit in Harris County district court against Chemetron Corp over a La Porte chemical plant. The board seeks an injunction to close the plant until it stops phosgene emissions, citing reports of gas exposure to 140 to 50 residents and inspector concerns after denied access to inspect plant grounds. Local officials support action to ensure safety.
The forecast calls for the first day of summer this Saturday with the longest daylight and likely hot conditions. Temperatures may range upper 60s to 90, with Baytown experiencing dry weather and minimal rainfall warnings. A Harris County Community Action Association election will choose 10 representatives for the board from Area 7 headquarters. Returns canvassed Tuesday night at HCCAA headquarters. New board takes office July 7. Eugene Cromwell to chair the election in Baytown.
Harris County Hospital District debated out-patient charity clinic options for Baytown indigents. A satellite clinic committee asked Mayor Glen Walker to convene groups from San Joenito Methodist Hospital Baytown Health League and East Harris County Medical Society to seek consensus. The hospital district will not intrude without local medical support and community backing. A meeting was set with a response due within a week.
President Nixon, in a wide ranging 32 minute news conference, says he hopes to meet Clark Clifford’s timetable for troop reductions in Vietnam by year end. He also discusses inflation control, the New York City elections, missile defense, and who ordered the wiretap of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s phone. Nixon confirms plans for a August review of withdrawals and cautions on inflation if prices rise further.
