A propane tanker plunged about 20 feet from an overpass near the MSUT interchange causing closures for over 24 hours. Traffic slowly returned to normal by about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday as emergency crews cleared wreckage and hazardous materials monitors checked the area.
Randy Oliver won the Pfc Wesley R. Riggs Memorial Scholarship for a Barbers Hill High School graduating senior. Riggs, 19, of Beach City, died May 17 2005 in Tikrit Iraq from injuries after an IED near his dismounted position. He served with the Army 2nd Battalion 7th Infantry 3rd Division Fort Stewart Ga. He was laid to rest May 25 2005 at National Cemetery Houston with full honors.
Baytown reports a 68 percent increase in waste diverted from landfills since the 96-gallon recycling carts were rolled out seven months ago. Assistant city manager Nick Woolery presented the findings to the City Council, noting reduced trash hauling by Waste Management after pilot neighborhoods showed strong recycling gains.
Cedar Bayou Navigation District officials reviewed revised economic benefit estimates for a Corps of Engineers project to deepen and widen the bayou from Galveston Bay to Highway 146. Martin Associates outlined calculations predicting millions of dollars in annual savings for shippers using the waterway, as plans include 10 foot depth, 100 foot width, wider passing lanes, and a straighter channel.
United Way of Baytown Area will hold its annual meeting from 11 30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 8 at Goose Creek Country Club in Baytown. Members in good standing who contributed or volunteered in 2012 2013 may attend free with lunch provided. Sponsors include ExxonMobil Bayer Chevron Phillips Community Auto Group and others. The agenda covers board member and officer elections and bylaws amendments to change the organization name and expand the board.
