Grand Jury To Check Purchas
A Harris County grand jury will review the purchase of 100 voting machines bought by the county for 1300 dollars. The 20 year old machines were sold at public auction in Florida for 30 dollars each to Shoup Voting Machine Corp which resold them to the county. District Attorney Carol Vance testified to the grand jury about information available so far. Several commissioners defend the purchase as sound. County Judge Bill Elliott who voted against it has asked County Attorney Joe Resweber to explore contract rescission.

Memphis Firm Wins Wallisville Reservoir Contract
Farrell Construction Co of Memphis Tennessee has been awarded an 11 156 706 contract to build the Wallisville Reservoir in West Chambers County. The project includes a 36900 foot levee to keep salt water out, a set of locks for boats and future barge traffic, and an earth dam about 12 feet above sea level with a four foot spillway. Construction is slated for about 1200 days and the reservoir will hold 19700 acres of water. Brown and Root was the only other bidder at 14187 656. Engineers believe the reservoir will seldom be inoperative even in worst cases.

Last Rites Held For W. A. Shaffer in Baytown
Funeral services for William Ardrey Shaffer 69 of Beach City were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Paul A. Lee Funeral Home Chiapel. He died at 8:20 p.m. Wednesday in a Baytown hospital after ill health. Burial was in San Jacinto Memorial Park Cemetery. Surviving wife Edith, daughter Mrs. J. C. Biggs, son Charles Ardrey Staffer, two grandchildren, Sgt. Charles Shaffer in Vietnam and Mrs. Donnie Forester, plus two great grandchildren. Shaffer was a Mason, AF&AM, Arabia Temple Shrine, Kennedy Commandery KT, and Baytown Shrine Club member. He and his wife moved to Baytown in 1920 from Kansas City, Missouri, after operating Morrell's Drive-In. He would have been a Baytown resident 50 years next month.
