Three days remain until the Louisiana and Houston area clash described as a major showdown. The sports scene builds anticipation as teams prepare for a high stakes contest with regional significance.
Lee College will stop funding its share of the daily Baytown bus service provided by the Harris County Transit Authority starting in July. Students and staff must now pay to ride, showing college IDs, as the city pledges to continue service with other funding. City Manager Bob Leiper calls the move unfortunate but vows system stability.
Crews work around the clock to pump water from the Texas Navy matriarch Battleship Texas as they patch a hull leak. State park officials, Texas Parks and Wildlife staff, volunteers, contractors, and a salvage diving company collaborate to keep the World War I and II service vessel afloat at San Jacinto Battleground State Park.
Baytown resident Webber, now in his nineties, moved there as a toddler in 1920 and has witnessed much local history. He recalls his father a boilermaker and the family living in Humble Oil's tent city before securing a duplex on Sterling Avenue. He enjoys sharing memories with younger friends.
The USS Texas moored at San Jacinto Battleground State Park needs hundreds of thousands for urgent repairs and billions more to be stabilized against Texas elements. Delivered by Newport News Shipbuilding in May 1912 for 5.83 million, the 100-year-old ship now requires funds well beyond its original cost to remain in place for another decade or more. The vessel has a storied service history including a crucial rescue mission. See funds on page 9.
