Baytown City Council will delay selecting a District 3 representative until next month. A special session June 22 will interview seven applicants, with a public input method to be decided by June 24. Mayor Mundinger notes the district vacancy since May 27 and nonbinding straw poll as a possible option.
Aman pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 50 years in prison this week, closing a four and a half year pursuit to extradite him from Mexico. The case centered on Lon Dunnam, an ex-wife who was kidnapped and killed in 1999, with authorities noting it was the longest case McCown had prosecuted after Interpol arrested Romeo Dominguez Lopez in Mexico.
Harris County Precinct 2 will reduce Lynchburg Ferry operating hours starting June 28, docking two boats nightly from 8:15 pm to 4:30 am. Spokesman Mark Seegers notes the move aims to curb spiraling costs while preserving service, with an estimated $200,000 annual saving though diesel prices and repairs may vary.
In Baytown, Lee College Regent Judy Navarre Jirrell was seated as chair, replacing her late father Jesse Navarre, after being sworn in with fellow members Wayne Gray and Ronn Haddox. The board then unanimously named Keith Coburn president, Don Coffey vice president, Haddox secretary, and Susan Moore Fontenot assistant secretary. Coburn praised Coffey’s two years at the helm and presented an oversized gavel before discussion continued after an executive session.
Pete Alfaro, chairman of the Bayou Bowl 2004 steering committee, is named honorary captain of the Texas squad. Alfaro recently completed a long tenure as Baytown mayor.
Baytown residents can adopt cats during Garfield screenings at Premiere Cinema 11 San Jacinto Mall booths from 3 to 7 p.m. today. Adoption costs 50 dollars with 40 dollars as a sterilization voucher. buyers must be 18 plus show ID and sign to sterilize and vaccinate by a set date.
