Supreme Court declines review in Communist Party case
The Supreme Court refused to review the overturning of a conviction against the Communist Party USA for failure to register under the Internal Security Act. The ruling leaves the lower court decision standing, announced in a brief order with no stated reason. Justice White did not participate. The appeals court had held the government failed to prove a signatory could register without self-incrimination. The same term, the Court also rejected contempt charges against former Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett and successor Paul Johnson in the James Meredith case.
