Banister honors friend with Pirates number change
Pirates bench coach Jeff Banister switched from 55 to 17 to tribute his childhood friend Ron Carelock who died in 1981. Banister, a Lee College alum, recalled wearing 17 as a youth and told Carelock’s parents he would honor him by taking the number during his senior year. Carelock’s life and numbers echoed across Banister’s athletic career and personal journey.
