Collins Prefers Space To Publicity In Apollo 11 Era
Astronaut Michael Collins, command module pilot for Apollo 11, says he enjoys space more than publicity and would rather remain anonymous. Born in Rome as the son of a U.S. military attache, he faced a serious spine issue that led to surgery and neck brace usage before joining Apollo 11’s lunar mission plan with Armstrong and Aldrin. Collins, 38, has flown Gemini 10 and links to Nassau Bay residence near the Manned Spacecraft Center, with wife Patricia Finnegan and three children, and a German shepherd named Dubhe.
