Baytown Votes No on Flood Bonds. Countywide Result Mixed

Harris County voters rejected a $21.5 million Hood flood control bond in Baytown and East Harris County, with only two city precincts supporting it. Across 335 precincts, 29,223 voted for and 22,315 against, as officials planned to finance urgent flood projects with at least $4 million soon. County Judge Bill Elliott praised the turnout and promised rapid action on the flood control program.

Better Jobs Attract City Public Works Staff

Better paying jobs are pulling workers from Baytown Public Works, says director Jack Morton. The department reports a four or five person shortage in street construction and maintenance as the city mulls wage increases in the upcoming budget. new fiscal year begins October with starting pay at 2.21 and 2.40 after a year. The Abe Laborers contract raises hourly wages from 3.65 to 4.20.

U S Army Spec. 6 Clyde fh. Williams III son of Mr and Mrs Clyde II Williams de of 500 Harris Road Highlands has received his second Bronze Star Medal and a Purple Heart for heroism in action in Vietnam on May 27. He earned a prior Bronze Star for bravery from Sept 6 1968 to Feb 6 1969. After wounds he underwent surgery in Saigon Okinawa and is now in Korea at Ardon doing clerical work awaiting discharge in September. Williams enlisted February 1968, trained at Fort Polk and Fort Knox and arrived overseas in September 1966. A Robert E. Lee High School and Lee College graduate he has one brother Bobby and two sisters.
