Family of Baytown’s Pfc. Roger Smelser received posthumous medals for valor and service in Vietnam. The ceremony featured MSgt. Frederick D. Jackson and Col. James J. Myers presenting the Bronze Star and Purple Heart among others. Smelser, killed March 2 near Hue, had served since August 1968 after leaving Robert E. Lee High School. The Baytown Optimist Club will recognize the Baytown Optimist Teen Age Baseball organization with a special awards program and dinner Monday night at 7 p.m. at the Junior Optimist Building on Market Street. The event will honor players, their parents, sponsors, managers, and wives along with the mayor, city manager, council members and their wives. Trophies will be awarded for winners and runners-up in each division, and all-star seniors and juniors will receive medals. Ethridge's Wife Hurt In Crash
Baytown contractor C W Ethridge died when his car collided with a tractor trailer eight miles south of Oakville in Live Oak County as he and wife Winema planned a Mexico vacation. Farquhar of Baytown, driver of the truck, was treated and released. Winema Ethridge survived with a broken pelvis and ribs and a son who is paralyzed.
