Fire near South Main fire station extinguished

Firemen fought a blaze next to the South Main fire station on Thursday evening as a motor in a brick motor room at a Walter well pump smoked at about 6:30 p.m. The motor burned out inside the structure. cause is not yet determined. Public works repaired the motor Friday.

Baytonian Named To State Credit Panel

W. L. MacKinnon, manager of Humble Credit Union, named by Gov. Preston Smith to a six member Texas Credit Union Commission created by the Texas Credit Union Act. He will continue as Mundle Credit Union treasurer and serves on national and state committees related to credit unions. The panel will regulate rules and report biennially to the State Senate.

Navy Cross Awarded to La Palma Marine for Valor in Vietnam

Marine Sgt. Dark R. Dittman of La Palma received the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism during a November 1968 reconnaissance mission near Hill 46 in Quang Tri Province Vietnam. Despite wounds he shielded a wounded comrade and directed a medical evacuation, then aided teammates through a night under fire. The ceremony at El Toro CA was attended by his family and hosted by Marine Aircraft Group 56.

Funeral services for L G Sanders 68 Baytown businessman were held at Memorial Baptist Church with Pastor Gr W Edward Kiele officiating. Interment in Forest Park Cemetery Houston under Parthbinan Funeral direction. Sanders retired from Culpeppers in 1904 later active in banking and would have been 69 on Oct 23.
