Firemen fought a blaze next to the South Main fire station on Thursday evening as a motor in a brick motor room at a Walter well pump smoked at about 6:30 p.m. The motor burned out inside the structure. cause is not yet determined. Public works repaired the motor Friday.
Harris County seeks 21.5 million in flood control bonds to unlock 10 million dollars in federally funded projects stalled for rights-of-way and utility work. Cooperatives with the Army Corps of Engineers await local funding on White Oak Bayou Vince Bayou and Little Vince Bayou projects. Bond fund balance is nearly exhausted, but officials say taxes will not rise as new bonds replace retired ones.
Ballots are mailed to Gulf Coast Industrial Workers Union members for officer and steward elections for the next 12 months. Ballots must be returned by 5 p.m. Monday July 21. New officials take office in September with candidates listed for president vice presidents secretaries treasurers and multiple steward roles across trades.
Governor Preston Smith intervenes in auto insurance rate debate proposing discussions with company presidents and a lay citizen panel to study rising premiums. He urges interim committees to work with the panel for solid recommendations ahead of the next legislative session.
State Senator Chet Brooks urged Kiwanis members that Texas fiscal action hinges on the August 5 constitutional amendment vote. He said governor Preston Smith will not sign a one year appropriations bill without approval of annual legislative sessions and noted the amendment would raise annual public assistance spending from 60 million to 40 million dollars.

W. L. MacKinnon, manager of Humble Credit Union, named by Gov. Preston Smith to a six member Texas Credit Union Commission created by the Texas Credit Union Act. He will continue as Mundle Credit Union treasurer and serves on national and state committees related to credit unions. The panel will regulate rules and report biennially to the State Senate.
Marine Sgt. Dark R. Dittman of La Palma received the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism during a November 1968 reconnaissance mission near Hill 46 in Quang Tri Province Vietnam. Despite wounds he shielded a wounded comrade and directed a medical evacuation, then aided teammates through a night under fire. The ceremony at El Toro CA was attended by his family and hosted by Marine Aircraft Group 56.
Funeral services for L G Sanders 68 Baytown businessman were held at Memorial Baptist Church with Pastor Gr W Edward Kiele officiating. Interment in Forest Park Cemetery Houston under Parthbinan Funeral direction. Sanders retired from Culpeppers in 1904 later active in banking and would have been 69 on Oct 23. Survived by wife Thelma son Leonard G Sanders of Baytown sister Mrs John G Jewin Houston brother Roy Sanders Fort Worth. Memorial gifts preferred to Harris County Heart Association. Pallbearers listed. honorary pallbearers include officers and employees of Citizens National Bank and related firms.
