Birth of the farm system transforms minor baseball in Fort Smith

A July 3 1922 Fort Smith meeting at the Goldman Hotel created the major league controlled farm system. Branch Rickey and the St Louis Cardinals built a network from Class D upward, with early clubs like Houston, later spreading to Houston in the Texas League while major leagues financed and dominated the minors. Wanderling recalls the Fort Smith talk and argues the farm system saved the minors, though it also enabled major league pullbacks on star players and ongoing disputes over control and profits.
