Baytown mayor Lee Liggett named chairman of the Regional Advisory Planning Committee for a long range study of Houston area transportation needs. The advisory group includes elected officials from all study-area cities and will assist in promoting acceptance of the plan and advising other committees. study initiated at the request of Harris County, Houston, and Pasadena to the Texas Highway Commission.
County Commissioners provided 20000 from local funds with 30000 state money. total project cost estimated at 200000. Oliver Stark of Texas Highway Department leads the plan for Houston area with federal funds to be refunded under Highway Act V of 1962. The effort includes Baytown and La Porte and aims to shape 20 year transportation needs.
Paul Marsh son of Mr and Mrs Albert R Marsh of 2103 East James and a senior at Robert E Lee High School received a nomination to attend the United States Naval Academy for the class entering Annapolis in July 1965 Rep Albert Thomas announced in a letter: he will be ratified by the Navy Department after physical and academic examinations. Coach Pete Sultis praised Marsh as a credit to football and a devoted student. Marsh plans to begin basic training in late June and hopes to qualify in aviation during his studies.
South Viet Nam's militant Buddhists, after helping topple three governments, warn the United States to refrain from interfering in their politics. Thien Tri Quang, a 42 year old monk, met Lt. Gen. Nguyen Thanh and led a Buddhist protest that helped oust premier Tran Van Huong. U.S. officials fear the Buddhists may seek to unseat future governments if their demands go unmet.
Lee College will start taking applications for 19 student jobs funded by a $6,379 Economic Opportunity Act grant. Positions include library, bookstore, physics lab, office, and clerical work, with up to 15 hours weekly and pay of 125 per hour.
Firefighters and volunteers battled a blaze at a La Porte apartment building sending three young children to the scene.
