Mrs. Melba Hale Powell 42 of Crosby died at 7 30 am Thursday from injuries after a one car crash on Highway 9 near Bohemian Hall Road. Her car struck a culvert and rolled, pinning her in the wreckage before Cloverleaf Ambulance took her to Northshore Hospital. She had lived in Crosby since 1963. Survivors include husband Billy Eugene Powell two sons Billy Andrews Arthur Andrews and three daughters Judy Grabow Beverly Har graves and Linda Kilgore.
Governor Preston Smith urged a constitutional change to allow 18 year olds to vote and called for a prison work release program and steps to fund a $10 billion water plan. He outlined tax and budget proposals later, endorsed the 1968 Democratic platform, and urged careful study of the Public School Study Committee findings while pushing teacher pay raises.

The 46 administrators including Supt. George H. Gentry received new three year contracts or two year terms. Notables nearing retirement age were given shorter terms while key roles such as principal, deputy superintendent and coordinators were extended. Several named individuals across Baytown schools earned three year agreements and will return contracts by February 15.
A survivor recounts the disaster as a bulldozer carrying ten people to safety stalls in a river during a sudden cloudburst. Six boys and four men are believed dead while a 28 year old school teacher describes the calm, prayers, and the gradual loss of life in the rising floodwaters. Donald C Courtney 39 of Baytown fatally injured in a head-on crash on Interstate 10 near Houston. Struck by a tractor trailer driven by Johnnie Strickland 34 of Osaka Mississippi after Courtney swerved to avoid a slow vehicle. No charges filed. Paul Wayne Bossiey 27 of 818 Grassmont Channelview was killed in a motorcycle crash at 1500 North Wayside Drive Houston. He struck a guard rail and fell from an overpass. Funeral 4 p.m. Friday Earthman Chapel with Memory Gardens burial. He is survived by his wife Melodye two daughters and several relatives. Bossley, a Baytown native, attended Robert E. Lee High School and worked at Humble Oil Baytown refinery.

A mentally unbalanced man fired at a Kremlin motorcade honoring four Soviet cosmonauts Vladimir Shatalov Boris Volynov Yevgeny Khrunov and Alexei Yeliseyev injuring a chauffeur and wounding Georgy Beregovoy slightingly.
