Ramsey Says Court Agrees On Employee Pay Increases
County Commissioner V V Ramsey said the Commissioners Court is unanimous for a five percent raise for regular county employees this year. He defended the plan against a Houston Chronicle report, noting the court also moved the property valuation from 20 to 22 percent to fund the raises. The budget for 1969 tops at 45.3 million with a 4.4 million flood control line, while 1.2 million in requests must be cut from department heads. Ramsey warned that some proposed raises for officials and several staffers are unaffordable, but praised two doctors as outstanding though their requests will not be granted. He also noted Harris County employees are not paid as well as city and state workers.

About 175 Humble employees represented by the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union go back to work at the Billings Montana refinery following a seven day strike. The settlement provides wage increases including six percent and a 22 cent minimum effective January 20 with further increases in 1970 and 1971, plus shift differentials and medical insurance contributions. Retirement benefits had already been liberalized and Baytown refinery workers are not covered by OCAW.
