Secretary of State Dulles will meet UN Chief Hammarskjold in Washington to press for freedom for American fliers imprisoned in Red China. Dulles seeks a direct report on Peiping talks with Chou En Lai and may confer with President Eisenhower and Congress. No White House appointment for Hammarskjold yet.
Baytown’s Director of Finance A. V. Barker announced he will begin assessing personal property values for Baytown businesses next month. He urged businessmen to prepare inventories promptly and contact city hall if inventories are not ready on time. Evaluations will cover merchandise and equipment. Barker noted last year’s cooperation was good.
Pasadena prepares a community welcome for Navy Lt. Donahoe his wife Helen and their adopted baby Ronit Marie. About 50 Baytown Pasadena residents reporters and photographers plan to greet them at the Baytown La Porte tunnel and escort the family to city hall where a large crowd is expected.
Massachusetts state police used a 30 ton Bulldog Walker tank from Fort Devens to end a do or die revolt at the state prison. Four convicts held 11 hostages including five guards for over 24 hours, led by Teddy Green, threatening a finish battle. Attorney General Fingold warned there would be no compromise and all would face first degree murder prosecutions. Bazooka teams joined armed police as guards remained under constant guard by telephone during the mutiny.

Former Baytown police chief H. E. McKee told The Sim he has no plan to sue the city over sick benefit pay he says civil service workers may be due. He noted he never intended to sue and filed the claim to reveal benefits for terminating civil service employees. McKee now runs a restaurant in Houston while his wife and daughter reside in Baytown until school ends. Ardith, a senior at Robert E. Lee, will graduate this spring.
Rice farmers in Baytown and surrounding counties will vote January 28 on acreage allotments for this year. If approved, government price supports rise to 90 percent of parity. if rejected, supports drop to 50 percent. Voting sites include Baytown Chamber of Commerce and the Mont Belvieu county building.
Six new members of the Bay town Country Club board of governors will take office next month. The election was announced at a board meeting on Tuesday. Names include J. I. Patterson, Brn 5, Love, RR, Warne, C. F. Kelly, Rex Curtin and A. S. Bynum. At the Feb 21 meeting officers will be elected. Holdovers are R. G. Sharpless, R. L. Patterson, George Bays, James Harrop, W L Beekman Jr. and J. B. Bradshaw. Current board members include G. Blair, S. Cook, WOW Harris, T. S. King, D. M. Meador and M. W. Morgan. R. L. Patterson serves as president, Meador as vice president, and Morgan as secretary treasurer.
Washington January 19 A 10 point civil rights bill package will be introduced in Congress within a week. Senator Hubert Humphrey said the measures include equal opportunity in employment and outlawing segregation in future state transportation. Senators Lehman and Magnuson join in drafting the package, which also proposes a federal civil rights commission, a joint congressional committee, a civil rights division in the State Department, anti lynching laws, and strengthened peonage and convict labor statutes.
Nationalist warplanes carried out retaliatory raids along China’s southeast coast, striking Communist vessels and targets around Amoy and Swatow. The communique says heavy losses were inflicted, with fighters sent to support attacks on the Tachens and Yikiangshan. Red forces reportedly bombed Tachen in a major air raid.
City Attorney ruled the West Main Civic League land, once Pelly property, is subject to city taxes from 1931 to 1948 despite prior exemptions. He cited Texas law tying exemptions to educational religious or charitable use, concluding the tract does not meet exemption criteria. State and county taxes already paid are noted. John M. A Harris County grand jury weighs charges in a case involving Eleanor Esta Smith, 14, accused of cashing a worthless check for 79 dollars as part of a wider scheme. Supporters include local officials and the lumber firm owner where the check was cashed. The girl testified she cashed payments under duress from her stepfather Herbert C. Smith, 61, who admitted pressuring her and her mother to cash more checks.
A nationwide search is underway for 16 year old Arley Lee Chesney of Baytown who left home on November 10 after failing all subjects at the end of the first nine weeks. He is described as five feet 14 inches tall, 169 pounds with blue eyes and black hair. He was last seen wearing faded blue jeans tan checked shirt and brown oxfords. Anyone with information should contact his home, the Department of Public Safety Houston MA 9641, or Raytown police.
