City grants shift toward regional, hardening projects after Ike
City officials say grant matches vary from 10 to 20 percent or equal matches, with many grants larger than the award itself. Since Ike, more than 20 million of 26.6 million in federal grants funded water and wastewater work and storm hardening. An additional 21.3 million Ike grants were announced since Sept. 30, with funds disbursed in stages. Other grants funded regional law enforcement and drug-fighting efforts, including 4 million for regional activities. The Department of Energy provided 672,300 for sidewalk construction along Massey Tompkins Road and Pruett Street. State funding totaled 269,779 for wetlands work, traffic signals, EMS, police training, and library materials. Lopez notes a trend toward regional projects in grants.
