Charlotte author and editor Harry Golden, listed in critical condition earlier, was reported to be walking and watching television at Memorial Hospital in Charlotte. A spokesman said Golden is improving, but no release date has been set.
In Cambridge Massachusetts two psychiatrists for the prosecution testified Albert DeSalvo known as the Boston strangler was not subject to an irresistible impulse during the 1964 attacks on four women. Dr Ames Robey and Dr Samuel Allen said he could distinguish right from wrong and could avoid capture, though impulsive. Joe DeSalvo, 35, watched from the courtroom as the testimony was given.
In Chokio Minnesota a bus carrying 30 students was stranded in a snowbound ditch after a Blizzard. Local residents formed a rescue caravan with a bulldozer mobile phone truck and another bus to reach the bus and bring the children to safety at the school cafeteria.
Marguerite West of La Porte and Jesse Strickland of Pasadena are elected as two new members of the State Democratic Executive Committee from Harris County. They will represent the Seventh Senatorial District and fill vacancies left after declines by local leaders. The other Harris County vacancies from District 11 remain open until the next meeting, with no volunteers yet named.
In San Antonio a district judge condemned police for holding drunken arrestees in communicado for hours during a midnight habeas corpus session. Judge Archie Brown ordered the release of a lawyer held after an abusive language arrest and urged city officials to fix the policy with the city attorney. Chief George Bichsel acknowledged the practice without legal basis, prompting calls to reform.
Five West Indies territories will become self governing states associated with Britain within seven weeks and may seek full independence without further action. Antigua and St Kitts Nevis Anguilla gain statehood on February 27 with Dominica and St Lucia on March 1 and Grenada on March 3. The islands will be known as the West Indies Associated States. Britain will retain defense and foreign affairs. Dayton, Ohio.
