DeZavala Grave Markers To Be Moved
Texas Parks and Wildlife plans to move only the grave markers of Lorenzo DeZavala and family from the current cemetery to San Jacinto Battleground State Park. The move stems from subsidence and tide damage making removal of graves unnecessary. OCAW officials awaited developments that could bring about 60,000 striking members back to work. In California about 1,000 members had already returned after contracts were approved with Union-Pure Oil Co. at Denver. Local 277 president Dan Edwards said some locals might reject the minimum terms and push for higher gains. The deals include a general wage hike of 42.5 cents an hour plus shifts and classifications increases, along with enhanced hospital care, pension, and tax benefits. Prestrike pay averaged $3.75 an hour. the union sought 72 cents an hour over two years.
