LBJ Urges Democrats to Hear Nixon and Push Social Reform

President Johnson tells Democratic majorities to sympathetically hear Nixon while pressing ahead with social reform. He sends a 195.3 billion budget to Congress and outlines programs for social security raises, 500000 new homes, urban development, poverty, fair housing, voting rights, safe streets, gun licensing, and higher congressional salaries. He urges bipartisanship but sets a strong reform agenda for 1970s.

Kiwanis Noon Meeting and Local Dance Event

Bayou Bridge Sticks Causing Baytown Traffic Jam

Traffic over the Cedar Bayou bascule bridge on Tri City Beach Road stalled early Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. stranding hundreds of workers heading to the U S Steel plant east of Baytown. Police rerouted vehicles via Texas Juambina Highway 146 and BM 1405 while electricians attended to a deteriorating submarine cable. Bridge tender Raybon Epperson noted the long standing problem and the 1928 structure remains prone to sticking during repairs by Paul Cantrel.

Cause Of Cancer Near Solution

Oklahoma City AP. Dr. Robert J. Huebner of the National Cancer Institute told University of Oklahoma medical students that researchers have many leads on human cancer causes. He noted a virus linked to tumors in animals has been found in a human cell, suggesting it may occur in others, and cited about 300 potential human viruses as known.

Five Million TIPCO Formed In Bay Town Venture

A new development corporation named Texas International Properties Corp TIPCO has formed in Bay town with over five million in assets. Key figures include H H Kuehn Zelman Kuehn and Howald D Marshall joining Meg Meyerson and Robert Silverman from Omaha with plans for Ramada Inn development and a 41 acre tract for apartments and commerce. The group holds properties such as Apartment Center White Hall Apartments and Cedar Cove lots with immediate plans for 125 to 150 new units plus office space at 1212 East Texas Avenue.

Buck Turner Ranch Sold to Baytown Houston Investors

The 240-acre Buck Turner Ranch near Garth Road on Interstate WO was sold to a Baytown and Houston investor group led by Gene Russell. Buyers include William F. Miller Harry Holmes and Mrs Perry W Britton. Sold for more than 1700 an unspecified amount.

Water delivery contract under study for U.S. Steel project

CIWA board to meet at Houston City Hall to award first contract diverting water to U.S. Steel. Bids opened with Everett Construction as low bidder at 169900, others ranged to 340000. Award tied to CIWA purchase of old Southern Canal Co. system and HL and Bower crossing plans for a Cedar Bayou link. Water supply to U.S. Steel up to three million gallons daily beginning in October.
