Mrs Blanca Arroyo 36 of Austin sister of Baytown residents died in a Pasadena hospital. Funeral held at Colonial Funeral Home Pasadena with burial in Houston. Survived by parents Henry G Garza Pasadena siblings Mrs F F Gongora Baytown Ruben and Ray Garza Baytown brothers and other siblings. Also notes local mothers club and PTA meetings with program on technology in classrooms.
Tax rules for selling a home with gain. If under 65, gain may be postponed by buying a replacement home within one year before or after sale. Adjusted sale price equals gross price minus fixing up and selling costs. For 65 plus, gain up to 20000 may be tax free if the home was a principal residence five of eight years. Only one lifetime election.

Washington API reports Senate Republican Leader Dirksen and other GOP leaders questioned President Johnson’s proposed 6 percent surcharge on corporate and most personal taxes to fund war costs. They urged closer scrutiny, spending recisions, and detail on budget effects, while Democrats split on the plan. Johnson defended the proposal as part of a steady course to grow the economy, finance Vietnam, and maintain easier credit, acknowledging setbacks but promising further reports.
A Baytown group filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission to reserve UHF Channel 50 for a Baytown television station. Petitioners include Attorneys George Chandler and Richard Park, Mrs. Hellen Nelson, Dr. W. T. Jones Jr. and Dr. H. W. Kilpatrick. The Houston area currently receives three VHF stations and the new Channel 39 UHF outlet.
The Harris County Tuberculosis Association's mobile xray unit will be at the Maxim supermarket parking lot in La Porte from 10 a.m. until noon on Tuesday, Jan. 17. Persons wanting the best X rays may get them at the mobile unit. The unit will not return to Baytown until next day.
Permits for spring term registration at Lee College are now available in the registrar’s office. Registration is planned for January 1 and 24 with classes starting January 5. AJL students must obtain a permit and then have a tentative schedule approved by a counselor or division chair. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday.
In Washington AP Powell urges Negroes to abandon Democratic loyalties and hints a third party may serve as their best political weapon after the House refused to seat him pending a qualifications probe. He calls for tax resistance and independent action while supporters chant for Adam for president. He criticizes Northern liberals and Republicans as race haters while warning the fallout could reach Watts and Harlem. The nine member committee will review his case in about five weeks.

The fourth annual Baytown crippled Children's Benefit Ball, co sponsored by Baytown Elks and the Knights of Columbus, will be held at KC Hall Saturday night January 23. Proceeds from the $5 per couple donations go to the Baytown Cerebral Palsy Treatment Center building fund. Al Marks and his Orchestra will provide music. last year the event netted over $1,000, with hopes for a higher total this year. Tickets are available from members of either organization.
Baytown and Chambers County schools will receive the science fair rules for the Greater Houston Science Fair to be held at Sam Houston Coliseum March 31 to April 2. The event offers two divisions for grades 7-12, with senior division topics in biology chemistry physics and mathematics and junior division in mathematics and biological physical or earth science. Grand award winners and their sponsors earn trips to the 18th International Science Fair in San Francisco May 9-13, plus $500 scholarships for four senior division winners. many other cash prizes are planned.
Citizens National and First National named new directors on Wednesday. Peoples State re elected all officers and directors. Tom Conder from Baytown was added to Citizens board and Dr Morris Wolfean moved from advisory at First National to the board after annual stockholder meeting.
Peoples State Bank re elects all officers and adds Conder to the board. Longtime officer O W Dube to retire and join advisory board. Citizens Bank adds Conder as 24th director. New slate shows Allen Rice promoted to vice president with several officer changes and a wide list of directors and executive staff across both banks.
