Pessimism Rise Over U S Proposals at Paris Talks

Paris AP report says the National Liberation Front would find it difficult to accept the latest U S proposals to shape the Vietnam peace talks. Tran Hoai Nam called the plans tortuous and said Paris must be four-party, not two-sided, with North Vietnam and the NLF opposing a two-country format.

Weather outlook Buoyed by slight rain chance drop

The forecast says rain probability falls to 30 percent late Friday. Temperatures rise into the low 40s at night and near 60 during the day through Saturday. An Arctic cold front from the Panhandle is expected to reach Baytown late Saturday or Sunday bringing more rain and cooler temperatures.

Housing Group Asks For Loan For Baytown Units

The Baytown Housing Authority applied to the Housing Assistance Administration in Fort Worth for a modernization loan to upgrade 160 low rent Baytown units. Architect Lowell Lammers and executive director Mrs. Miriam Turner led a survey, interviewing tenants to determine needed repairs. The request, supported by regional director Thomas Y. Callahan, aims to replace sinks, tile floors, add washer dryer connections, new refrigerators, and improve lighting and playgrounds.

Water Districts set votes for new boards near Baytown

Harris County fresh water districts 1-A and 1-B will elect five directors and two directors respectively next Tuesday. District 1-A covers McNair and Linus while 1-B serves area east of Highlands. Incumbents and several challengers vie for five seats, with unopposed tax collector candidates. Harris County WCTD No. 1 at Highlands also holds two director seats.

OCAW Walkout Won’t Affect Baytown Much

A nationwide OCAW strike called to begin at 12:01 a.m. Saturday could minimally impact Baytown plants though workers across the Houston Gulf Coast face possible job disruptions. In Baytown area, Shell Oil and Chemical Deer Park plants and nearby refineries could feel effects if the walkout proceeds, with about 12 000 OCAW workers in the Houston Galveston region and 1 500 at Deer Park.

Work's Work Is Measuring Rain

In December 1968 Hurley G. Work's rain gauge near Highway 146 recorded 1.23 inches. His year total reached 66.5 inches, making 1968 wetter than 1967's 44.1 inches and 1966's 34.1. Houston International Airport showed 61.44 inches, the wettest year there since 1961, with past peaks of 72.86 inches in 1946 and 68.23 in 1959. Work, who has led Rebel Motel operations nine years, began tracking rainfall for the mosquito control district in 1965 after answering a notice seeking volunteers. He now uses a newer wedge-shaped gauge advertised in a magazine, which he prefers for accuracy.

Eastern Airlines hijack lands in Havana with 148 aboard

An Eastern Airlines DC8-61 with 140 passengers and eight crew members was hijacked from New York to Miami and diverted to Havana, Cuba. FAA officials reported the crew including Capt Dennis Vanhuss said they were headed to Havana as authorities dispatched two Cuban-bound planes to retrieve the passengers.

Murder Suspect Released In Barrett Station Woman Death

A murder suspect held for questioning in the shooting death of Maggie Irvin of Barrett Station and the wounding of another woman near Crosby was released Thursday afternoon by the Harris County Sheriff's Department. The victims were found in a car along Highway 90. Irvin was dead from bullet wounds. the other woman, Tomasa Sanchez Avalos, remained in critical condition at Ben Taub Hospital. The suspect, about 50 and a McNair resident, was released as investigations continue and the murder weapon remains unrecovered. The car was registered to Irvin.
