Winter poised to bite Texas as a new cold front sweeps down from the north. Forecasters warned of sharply dropping temperatures and chilly conditions, with advisories likely to follow for several areas across the state.

Washington reports a new Dust Bowl could form this spring across the Great Plains from New Mexico through Texas Oklahoma Panhandle into Kansas Colorado and Nebraska. On the second day of Washington's Birthday Celebration the Five-State Good Neighbor Council in Laredo, Texas, urged border cooperation with Nuevo Laredo. William L. McGill proposed sister-city disaster plans and border schooling bilingualism. Ramon Mier Guzman was named temporary Border Problems chair.
Texarkana reports a Class B district game ended when Redwater center Carroll Spender tossed the ball into Maud’s basket by mistake. The misthrow counted for Maud, giving them the points and the game in the third quarter.
A fisherman believed to be the sole survivor of a vessel that exploded and sank 55 miles from Galveston was brought to port. Coast Guard said he is H. Banderhofen, home town and vessel details undetermined.
Mrs. Mary Jane Jackson, 72, mother of Afiss Beulah Mae Jackson of The Baytown Sun, died in a hospital at 7 40 a.m. Friday. She had not been in good health for years and lived with her daughter in Baytown the past 11 years, a native of Groesbeck. Funeral services will be held at Worthmen chapel at 9 30 a.m. Saturday with Rev. Ewing McPhail and Hugh Clark officiating. Graveside services follow at Fortinberry cemetery in Groesbeck at 2 p.m. Sunday. Survivors include three daughters and three sons, plus five sisters and seven-year-old granddaughter Winnie Jane Morrison of Houston.
Texas government wrote hot checks Friday as banks across the state pledged to table warrants until funds return. The general revenue fund was exhausted Thursday, leaving the treasury broke and the deficit likely into early May, according to State Treasurer Jesse James.
Baytown's Key Club sponsored by Kiwanis will air a 25 minute program on Radio Station KREL at 6 p.m. Saturday linked to the cure vandalism project. Houston police indicate a definite suspect exists in the brutal bludgeon murder of Mrs. Latcille Quarles, a Baptist minister’s widow, but they will not identify the person. Lt. Doss said information suggests the suspect plays a role in the killing, though it is unclear if the suspect is male or female. A 39 year old evangelist friend from Dallas arrived to aid the investigation, with questions focusing on a large life insurance policy and church bonds connected to the deceased and her late husband.
In San Angelo Texas on February 19 District Attorney Aubrey Stokes said he will seek an April or May trial for Harry Washburn 88 and Andrew Nelson charged with murder in the January 19 car bomb that killed social leader Helen Harris Weaver 42. The grand jury indicted Washburn and Nelson after a lengthy inquiry into the blast that also wounded Helen Weaver's husband Thirty Weaver 87. Washburns lawyers are Clyde Vinson and Cliff Tupper with court appointed attorneys Royal Verret and Norman Art. Washburn was arrested on a tip from Nelson who was in a Houston jail for a burglary. Nelson faces multiple counts including murder conspiracy and dynamite charges.
