Baytown youths plan a benefit at the Quark Shack on Web. 25 to aid Norman Adams, a Baytown grid star injured weeks ago. Proceeds go to the Adams family as Norman begins a slow recovery, with local committees and parents backing the effort.
Holland Page and Austin and Houston contracting won the 4.13 mile Highway 73 segment from the San Jacinto depot to Magnolia Street east of Channelview with a bid of 954,585. The project connects Houston Port Arthur superhighway toward the San Jacinto river and is to be approved by the State Highway Commission within two weeks. Construction could start within a month, with 365 working days allotted. About 35 local workers currently on site, rising to around 75 during paving and four overpasses.
United Press reports roaring fires claim at least 13 lives in the United States and Canada. In Baltimore a three story building collapsed trapping firemen. fatalities and injuries tally rise. In Montreal a five story building fire amid a snowstorm killed 14 and injured 10. In Japan a blaze killed 99 elderly women in the wartime context.

In Houston a backyard cache of 550 dollars splits a family crisis. Eight year old Steve Maturek, 11 year old Richard Owens, and 9 year old Douglas found the money in a burled coffee jar. The Stokes and Forque households face foreclosure and distrust of banks as Deputy Sheriff Earl Ledeune resolves the case.
Baytown real estate and mortgage loan businessman William W. Reichart filed Thursday to challenge incumbent R. H. Pruett in the April 5 mayoral election. Reichart pledged a clean campaign and spoke of property revaluation, tax redistribution, city planning, better parking, and attracting more business. He has a Baytown address on Texas Avenue and serves as a loan correspondent for two life insurers. Reichart and his wife Irene reside at 2207 Florida.

David Cade of La Porte will join 14 other Eagle Scouts from the Sam Houston council on a trip to the State Capitol. The group will report to Gov Allan Shivers on Scout work and conservation efforts, highlighting ties between the Boy Scouts and national leaders. Cade, a La Porte High student, is a two year Eagle Scout and God and Country award recipient and attends Troop 300 with his father as scoutmaster.
Houston police tie the murder of Lucille Quarles to a prior burglary through a kitchen window broken weeks earlier. Detectives say the assailant entered via the broken window and killed the 46 year old widow, dragging her into the bathroom and leaving bruises and evidence of a struggle. The body was found by Rev O C Edwards and Mrs Clifford Lucas after they retrieved a key left for emergencies. The window break likely allowed entry while other doors remained locked.
Avon Knighten, a G T Southwestern Baytown installer, attends a 40 hour basic station installation and maintenance course in San Angelo and will receive a certificate. Also in Baytown, a talent show sponsored by the Carver PTA features students and staff, with tickets 50 cents adults 25 cents students, at 7 p.m. The Baytown school board meets with architects to discuss future building standards. La Porte bids on sewer extensions funded by a 60900 bond. Playhouse tickets for Years Ago go on sale for an 8:20 p.m. Tuesday performance at Le College auditorium.
A federal grand jury in Oklahoma City returned an indictment against a teenage reform school inmate on charges of threatening to kill President Eisenhower. The case centers on alleged communications aimed at the president and marks a rare federal prosecution involving a juvenile offender.
Dallas oil man Tohn Moronny 58 leaps from an 11 story Latta Fe building in downtown Dallas to his death Wednesday night. Moronny was identified as a member of a prominent local oil family and the tragedy shocked the city. He reportedly had been distressed over business and personal issues in the days prior to the fatal plunge.
A 100 member East Harris unit for disaster police work is planned by Police Chief Roy Montgomery. Veterans from towns east of the San Jacinto River will train at 7 30 PM on Fridays at the VFW hall Decker Drive with instructors from the police department. The unit aims to aid traffic control looting prevention and evacuation during disasters and seeks Latin American and African American veterans to balance leadership and language needs.

The first five state good neighbor council meeting in the United States is set to open in Laredo on Thursday with several hundred delegates. Governors of Texas and Tamaulipas Nuevo Leon Coahuila and Chihuahua will attend along with Texas Good Neighbor Chairman Neville G. Penrose and officials from Texas agencies.
Baytown area scouts plan district roundtables to select East Harris District’s Jamboree representative. The winner must be a first class scout age 14 to 18 and travel to Niagara Falls for August 18 to 28. Meetings set for Thursday and Friday at 7 pm.
In two legislative proposals Texas lawmakers moved toward loosening work schedules and loan rules. One bill would let banks operate on a five day week with holidays limited to six major observances. The action awaits the governor signature as a potential law.
