Storm drenches Brownwood as families struggle to recover from record rainfall. Mrs. Thomas recalls three feet of water in the driveway while authorities warn residents near Mapleton Street. The floating concrete swimming pool and damaged homes highlight the urgent need for a levee.
Baytown officials estimate Brownwood area flood losses at about 250000 with 150 homes reporting water intrusion. Fletcher Hickerson notes furnishings and appliances suffered heavy damage while homes themselves may be less affected and outlines SBA and Red Cross assistance.

The trustees awarded H H Construction Co of Houston a lump sum bid of 299621 to build four elementary school media centers and kindergarten spaces at Ashbel Smith Lamar Alamo and San Jacinto, plus office additions. The bid violated bidding rules but was allowed by legal opinion.
Baytown officials discussed emergency area declaration with SBA help for Brownwood after a Texas DPS disaster relief visit. Col. Jesse Ward urged support for a levee project and reported to Gov. Preston Smith. Rep. Joe Allen pressed for passing related legislation as 150 to 200 homes' damage was estimated.
Mr and Mrs Junior Crosby faced knee deep water flooding their Park Street bakery home in Brownwood late Thursday into Friday. They evacuated at 176 Cabannis after a midnight warning and returned Friday to find water pouring from a color TV as they described a shocking, disastrous scene. The Crosbys said they moved from Houston 13 months ago and called the incident the awfulest sight they had seen.
