Cedar Bayou Deepening Hearing Scheduled in Houston

A public hearing on deepening and widening Cedar Bayou will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the Humble Building, Houston, by the U S Army Corps of Engineers. Former Texas Governor Price Daniel will present the case for the Cedar Bayou Project, representing Liberty Chambers Navigation District. Baytown Chamber of Commerce official Dave Moore will provide Cedar Bayou statistics for the short briefing. Other Houston Galveston Bay area studies to be discussed include Dickinson Shagou, Galveston Channel, Clear Creek, Clear Lake, and the Texas City Channel industrial barge portion, among others.

Baytown seeks state aid for Brownwood storm damage

Baytown City Councilman Andy Braswell urged Governor Preston Smith to dispatch a state engineer to assess Brownwood area storm damage for possible federal disaster aid eligibility. Gov. Smith pledged full office resources and a state safety inspector would survey sites, with officials aiming to speed a levee feasibility study to protect Brownwood Lakewood.

Mayor Cravey Opts Out of Re Election in Open Race

Mayor Seaborn Cravey announced Thursday night he will not seek a third term, clearing the field for a wide open April 1 mayoral race. Incumbent councilmen Albert Fanestiel Andy Braswell and Glen Walker are seeking the post, with filing open immediately through February 28. Walker starts a first term on the council this year while Fanestiel and Braswell both hold council seats. both resigned to allow mayoral filing, pending election eve refile options. Cravey praised the field noting three strong candidates and said after long service it was time to step aside.

Council May Call Public Hearing On Zoning Law

City council and the Baytown Planning and Zoning Commission plan a noon Monday session to discuss a proposed zoning ordinance and consider calling a public hearing. Mayor Seaborn Cravey urged action while some council members prefer a voter decision at the April 1 election or public input before any formal vote.

Baytown Sergeant Receives Bronze Star for Valor in Vietnam

Army Sgt. James C. Garrison Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. James C. Garrison, 900 Parkway Drive, earned the Bronze Star with V device for actions on Oct. 27 1968 as a radio telephone operator with Company B Third Battalion 60th Infantry during a reconnaissance in force in Dinh Tuong Province. Despite heavy fire his calm communications aided battalion command. He also earned the Air Medal for flying over 23 combat helicopter missions. A 21-year-old Robert E. Lee High School graduate, he attended Texas A&M University and volunteered in September 1967, with basic training at Fort Polk Louisiana.

Evacuation Over Brownwood as Baytown Faces Severe Flooding

Torrential rains and strong tides forced about 300 residents from Brownwood peninsula in Baytown on Valentine’s Day. Water reached 3 feet in homes, eight inches in 15 minutes, and tides peaked near nine feet before subsiding. Civil Defense workers aided evacuations, while authorities controlled traffic as residents returned by late morning.

Storm damages Humble shop building in Baytown refinery

Baytown crews worked overnight to clear streets and debris after a severe storm. The central shop at Humble Oil Baytown Refinery sustained about 20 000 dollars in damage, with one eighth of the roof torn off. No injuries were reported. Water entered Humble Enjay and Humble docks facilities, halting city public works operations for the day. A lift station was reportedly lost for the first time since Hurricane Carla.

Brownwood flood damage areas and street barricades reported

Lanham said several Brownwood lift stations were damaged and a special trash pickup will be held Saturday. Barricades blocked traffic on Goose Creek Stream at Market near Robert E. Lee High School and at West Texas Busch Terrace. Inbound Spur 201 to Baytown was barricaded due to heavy flooding. Kemah and Seabrook areas also flooded. Seabrook described as hit hard with boats adrift.
