Media Center Kindergarten Bids Exceed Estimates

Five bidders competed for four elementary school projects including two kindergarten spaces and media centers. H and H Construction Co. of Houston submitted a lump sum bid of 299 621 for all four but did not bid the projects individually, raising a legality question. Second low was J Larvin of Houston with 317 792 total and individual bids of 111 760 for Ashbel Smith 81 978 for San Jacinto 78 988 for Lamar and 52 427 for Alamo. The board meets Friday to consider awards and architect plans to discuss legality with the district attorney. The projects aim to add kindergarten space and media centers ahead of fall classes.

U S Steel Water Hearing Set for Feb 28 in Houston

A Texas Water Quality Board public hearing will be held February 28 in Houston on a permit for U S Steel Corp to discharge 184 million gallons daily of treated industrial wastewater into Cedar Bayou. The application notes most waste comes from cooling and processing at the Chambers County mill east of Baytown.
