Editorial: County police duty consolidation urged under sheriff
Citizens should retain control as Harris County debates consolidating law enforcement under the sheriff rather than a court-appointed chief. A three member study panel led by former District Attorney Carol Vance recommends abolishing the contract deputy program, keeping the sheriff as chief, and addressing inefficiencies, duplication and training standards while preserving civil paper service by constables. A voter driven system is preferred to ensure accountability at the ballot box.
