Marker to be moved for repair at Evergreen Point Golf Course

A marker associated with Ashbel Smith will be picked up and repaired in Houston, then installed this month on a grassy island inside Evergreen Point Golf Course entrance. The course sits on the historic 1000 acre Evergreen Plantation bought by Smith in 1848, with the Hazelwood family later developing the course in memory of Betty Hazelwood. A granite stone honoring Smith, produced in 1936 by the San Jacinto Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, will flank the marker after relocation from Business Highway 146 in 2005. Williams notes optimism that both markers will be safer and more visible to visitors. Williams also traces Smith’s deathbed care to Nicholas Schilling, a Baytown doctor, whom he wrote about in Early Texas Physicians (1999).
