Fred C. McClurg of 422 Alford Baytown florist was in serious condition after a heart attack early today. He was at Citizens National Bank around 9:15 am arranging floral displays when the attack hit. He called cashier James E. Sherwood, a doctor was summoned, and an ambulance rushed him to San Jacinto General Hospital.
In northeast Korea an engineer battalion, facing Chinese encirclement, built two airstrips and repaired roads under heavy fire. Lt Col John Partridge praised the unit as it fought for 10 days, while the First Marines expanded a nearby airstrip at Hagaru, enabling C-47 transports to shuttle supplies and evacuate wounded. More than 60% of personnel and equipment were reported lost.
