Police Break Up Riot At Georgia University

Athens Ga Police and troopers used force to disperse a crowd of more than 400 University of Georgia students during a campus demonstration. Two students were arrested, cars discharged, and rocks were thrown at patrol cars as demonstrators blocked traffic and hung effigies. New Postal Rule Lets Message Inside Package

Postmaster L Neal announces a new postal service allowing a first or third class letter to be placed inside a package. The inside letter must be noted on the outside and require an extra stamp. The 60 day trial began November 28 and covers combinations of mail classes for business and product communications.

Chambers County drilling depth record eyed near Mont Belvieu

Texaco announced a test on a W. A. Leavens lease of 132 acres may push drilling depth to as deep as 26,000 feet, potentially the deepest in Chambers County. The site lies a mile north of Mont Belvieu and about 3000 feet east of Backers Hill field. Texaco seeks the Yegua section on the east side and recently opened predictions on Barbers Hill north flank near 11,000 feet. Other wildcats include Sun Oil near Grangefield in Orange County and Concho Petroleum in Jefferson County.

The Baytown area expects little temperature change despite a Pacific cool front due late Thursday or Friday. Tuesday's low 43 and high 69, midmorning Wednesday 66. Slain NAACP Leader Had Conservative Race Views

Sheriff J McGinty said the Schulenberg NAACP leader Herbert Johnson, 60, was killed possibly due to his conservative stance on integration. Johnson's body was found near Mount Eden after his auto was set on fire. Younger members at a recent meeting reportedly clashed with him, labeling him radical against broader racial changes. A Dallas NAACP official dispatched a leader to investigate any link to the death. A man detained for questioning was cleared after a polygraph test.

Reserved Seats Exhausted For Big Baytown Tyler Semi Final

Tickets for the Baytown Tyler semifinal at Memorial Stadium are in high demand with 2,000 ducats sold out and standing room to follow. By Tuesday afternoon 12 30 pm many reserved seats were exhausted prompting school officials to plan standing room for 1 1 or 2 per person. Students cannot buy at the gate with prices set at 50 cents for students and 1 35 for adults. The rush drew requests from Dan Stallworth Humble executives and several Texas newspapers as fans from Dallas Galveston and Houston sought blocks of seats ahead of the game Saturday.
