Baytown faced a heat wave and widespread outages Tuesday after two major power failures Monday night. Houston Light and Power reported an overloaded downtown circuit causing a pole-conductor failure on Cherry Street, leaving hundreds without air conditioning during one of the year's hottest nights. Restoration began and extended into Tuesday morning as crews fought separate trouble in Britton Cravens addition. hospitals and elevators were affected and residents fled heat with cars toward the beach.

Brownwood Civic Association Names Six New Directors
Six new directors were elected to the Brownwood Civic Association board at the annual meeting in the Community Building Monday night. The six are Buelow Robinson Frank Clements Emanuel Swain all serving two year terms. Co H Bone current president reviewed the year and noted 1953 54 gains include a connecting road between Brownwood and Lakewood with county agreement and road work to start in three to four weeks with about 4001 right of ways cleared. The annual barbecue is planned for the second week in September and officers for the year will be announced after conformations are obtained.

ALICE Texas July 27 Bal lots from three of four counties of the 7th Judicial District were gathered at the county courthouse Tuesday in a potential contest over the apparent victory of a judge supported by George Parr and a district attorney opposed by Parr. Neither side indicated intent to contest. Parr noted Sam Burris of Alive appeared to have defeated incumbent District Attorney Barbara Norris, while Mark Heath of Falfurrnax conceded the returns favored ex-judges. Woodrow Laughlin, Heath's rival, had been removed from office by the Texas Supreme Court March 17 for improper conduct.
