Remembering Brownwood Subdivision After Hurricane Alicia
The Brownwood peninsula near Baytown, once home to nearly 400 families, was destroyed by Hurricane Alicia in 1983 and long plagued by land subsidence. After repeated flooding and groundwater pumping, the city bought out residents and transformed the area into a wetlands wildlife sanctuary, ending residential use. Some residents resisted the buyout while others moved on.
