Alicia 1983: Baytown battered by deadly Texas hurricane
The 1983 Hurricane Alicia roared ashore near Galveston on August 18 with 96 mph winds and caused $2 billion in Texas damage. In Baytown the storm brought near 11 foot surge, destroyed 2,297 dwellings, left 21 dead, 63,000 aided by Red Cross, and damaged local schools and college facilities.

Smoking ban trials begin in Baytown sparking renewed debate
Baytown trials over the city smoking ordinance opened with five citations from 160 to 195 dollars. Two trials on August 13 led to mixed results with one guilty verdict and appeals. Earlier trials included a dismissal and a $113 total for another defendant. The 1999 ordinance allowed designated smoking areas separated from other spaces.
