In Austin thousands gathered to protest the GOP redistricting plan. Organizers and participants urged lawmakers to redraw district lines fairly. The demonstrators emphasized public input and transparency amid ongoing political negotiations.
Bayland Island faces a decision by the Baytown City Council on selling the small waterfront community. Ten to fifteen live-aboard residents shelter on boats at the marina, forming a tight, diverse group. Residents praise the location yet note ongoing problems as authorities weigh the island's future.
Baytown reports the first of 22 constitutional amendments on September 13. Prop 1 would authorize the Veterans Land Board to use assets from the veterans land and housing assistance funds to provide homes for all aging veterans. The current rule allows using excess funds only for bond payments. officials say the change could save about 1.4 million dollars annually.
The Baytown church burned down after a 3 p.m. Saturday fire in an area lacking water hydrants. No injuries were reported as Beach City and Barbers Hill aided before water ran out. Pastor Kevin Kleinhenz and Battalion Chief Mariam Wyse described the gallant but doomed effort.
The city eyed rapid growth along Hutto Boulevard and Baker Road with a professional park and new office buildings. Clayton Realtors oversees 12 acres for a 16-building professional park on Hutto Boulevard near Rollingbrook Drive, while a restaurant and two offices rise on Baker Road between Hutto and Cynda Brooke. Harris expects landscaping, parking and a shift to professional offices, not retail, as development proceeds.
